Very centrally located in Leeds city centre, just off of Briggate, Whitelock’s is Leeds’ oldest pub, serving stunning food, real ales and ciders. First opening as the Turks Head in 1715, it started off mainly serving the merchants and traders of the area. In 2008, the pub received the 100th iconic ‘blue plaque’ to be hung in Leeds by the Leeds Civic Trust, celebrating the age and success of the venue, including the rebuilding of the pub in the 1880s by the Whitelock family.
The restaurant and bar area is truly stunning. Rennovated with Victorian influence and boasting a whole variety of original Edwardian features, it is a gorgeous venue to visit. Polished copper tables, rich red leather sofas and bright, opulent stained glass windows all create a beautiful environment in which to enjoy a meal or a relaxing drink. A quaint paved outside area offers a lovely space for al fresco dining in the sunshine – a lovely outdoor retreat from the bustle of the city centre. The real coal fire and original features of the building are warm and inviting and the unique cast iron Whitelocks’ table bases are a stunning touch to a stunning restaurant and pub.
The menu is crafted from seasonal dishes sourced from local suppliers, the majority coming from Leeds Kirkgate Market. Fresh and expertly chosen, the quality of food at Whitelocks is just one reason for its continual success and local renown. There is a range of dinner choices, offering pub classics such as Butler’s steak and chunky chips, or a homemade beef in ale pie, served with chunky chips and gravy. There are a number of delicious vegetarian options too, including a temping goat’s cheese and asparagus mousse, homemade soup of the day and a root vegetable and lentil casserole. Sharing platters are perfect for two or three people, with a choice of a fish or charcuterie selection, and there are a number of tasty homemade desserts to finish with.
