A small, sedate venue ideal for cream teas, etc. Excellent food and service. On our visit some tables had not been cleared from previous guests which being a small room gave an untidy initial feel.

One of the best afternoon teas, a lovely environment just a little noisy on this occasion.

Fantastic quality afternoon tea. It is beautifully presented and the selections of savoury and sweet items are perfect. I will definitely be paying another visit.

Waiting staff were pleasant. Where we were placed was a bit like a thoroughfare -with people from the gallery- walking past and staring. No waiting area- had to wait by occupied tables to be seated at our table! Had to ask for drink refills. Went to pay at the entrance reception desk - lady there was quite abrupt and sent us back into another area of the tea rooms where again we had to wait by occupied tables until staff were free to take our payment.

I took a friend for lunch. Due to her husband's poor health, we hadn’t seen each other for quite a while.

The restaurant, food and service was excellent, however, I did ask for the background music to be turned down. It was too loud for conversation. Our waitress kindly obliged.

We had a baby shower party and missed advised one number. Was very impressed with how accommodating the staff were. The food was lovely and the best cup of tea we all have had. I would definitely recommend.

Very lovely afternoon tea, plenty for everyone and a nice touch was that the coffee was also endless, sandwiches were fresh and so much cream for the scones big thumbs up from me.

Fantastic experience for my 12 year old daughter. Good variety of savory and sweets.

We were disappointed with the reception only 2 of us at 3 pm. table booked but none were ready for service. Food OK but considering it was an open day they failed to impress.

Lovely tea, just a bit secluded.

    Amazing experience and excellent service.

Very nice home made soup! Very limited menu - I asked to see the main menu and they said "we don't have one, we really only serve afternoon teas".

An excellent dinner at The Dining Room! The welcoming staff and delicious food had the entire family smiling. A particular dish I'd like to mention is the pork fillet and potatoes. Possible the most satisfying meal I've ever had!

I came here for lunch with my friend and we thought it was great. I had the chicken roulade and loved it. Will be recommending The Dining Room to people as it's not to be missed!

I took my mother here for afternoon tea at The Dining Room and we both found it to be delightful. The cakes were delicious!

Pleasant little restaurant. Unfortunately not very big and not a great menu selection although what was on offer was very tasty. A lot of older people there as I suspect it is more of a 'drop in' eatery for Rennie Mackintosh visitors than discerning diners.

The food was well cooked and beautifully presented. The service was excellent. My only comment would be that my party struggled to select menu options for the children. That said we put together our own options from the menu provided and these were met to the letter. Fantastic! Will definitely be returning.

A very enjoyable Christmas Dinner - beautifully cooked and served.

Not sure about the new menu - will try it again before giving our verdict!

Far more serious was the lack of gin!

We came back - and were not disappointed. The person who served us previously remembered us - service just as good - food still as enjoyable ( but the menu identical to last time - it will need to change a little bit soon or we will have worked through all the options - hence marked at 9).

    Further bookings beckon.

A real discovery. Good food, lovely setting (especially if you sit by the window) and the nicest service I've encountered for a long time. Friendly, helpful but not overwheening.

    We will return!

As a visitor to the restaurant on several occasions I can honestly say I have never been disappointed by the food. The excellent food is not confined just to the main courses with side dishes also being very tasty!

We say…

Situated in the heart of Northampton, The Dining Room is the in-house, boutique-style restaurant of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh House and Galleries. Situated adjacent to the Gallery, at number 82 Derngate, the restaurant mimics the art-deco style of the House. Its location makes it ideal for those who have visited the gallery, are looking for a pre-theatre venue, or just fancy a sophisticated lunch or classy evening meal.

Owned and run by partners Rachel Judd, at the front of house, and Daniel Sutch, Chef, The Dining Room has many regular customers as well as drawing in new visitors on a daily basis. The restaurant offers a small and beautifully formed dining room that caters for patrons of the house and museum as well as those who want to sample the delicious culinary creations on offer. Dark wooden floors, pure white walls, black chairs and tables and simple artwork on the walls creates a contemporary and stylish atmosphere that provides a formal yet relaxed dining experience. The Dining Room is available for private hire in the evenings for special events including family occasions, providing the perfect backdrop for a memorable night.

In May 2009, The Dining Room came under new management who focus on using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. This change in ethos revitalised the restaurant, making it a superb eatery that champions local Northamptonshire growers and breeders. Open all day, you can expect to find breakfasts that include free range scrambled eggs and bacon from Woburn, light bites at lunch such as a warm ciabatta sandwich filled with pan-fried chicken bread, salad and mayonnaise or a full meal of tender pork fillet with a red wine and plum sauce served with dauphinoise potatoes. The traditional Afternoon Tea at The Dining Room has become one of the most popular events, with cakes served on a beautiful cake stand, perfect for recharging before heading out shopping or after the museum. Booking for meal times is highly recommended due to the popularity of this restaurant.
