We say…

Located almost in the shadow of Newark Castle and about 20 minutes walk from the train station, Stray’s Cafe has been a part of the fabric of Newark for many years. Combining a bookshop, cafe and jazz venue it’s a fiercely independent venue that’s stood the test the of time. Mat and Liz keep things funky and fresh with their commitment to locally sourced food and a creative energy that makes this cafe an unmissable treat.

The building is part of the furniture within Newark, with parts of it dating back to the 1500’s and while things have changed since then, there is a history that fills the whole place with character. The bookshop and cafe share a building, with the distinctive white paint and old-style signage of the bookshop beautifully juxtaposed against the modern red brickwork of the cafe. There is plentiful seating both inside and out, alongside space for live jazz performances, which makes for an interesting experience that’s straight out of New Orleans.

A great venue for breakfast, Stray’s focusses on having a few dishes done well, rather than an extensive menu. The highlight is, of course, the full English Breakfast, which includes eggs, bacon, sausages, sauteed new potatoes, mushrooms and baked beans all cooked with the flair and creativity that Stray’s is known for - all the breakfast meals also come with complimentary tea or coffee. The lunch menu offers a wide selection of sandwiches and paninis alongside house specials that are cooked to order using locally sourced products where possible. The Mississippi chicken is a particular standout, a tender chicken breast cooked ‘southern style’ and served with tatties, side salad and various dips.

If you’re in Newark and are looking for a somewhere truly local, Stray’s is a fantastic opportunity to soak up some history and great food at the same time. Perfect for a quick breakfast before exploring the town or just somewhere interesting for lunch, it’s somewhere you’ll find yourself returning to.
