Stupendous authentic and a brilliant atmosphere!

Our visit last night demonstrated why Times restaurant critic Giles Coren reviewed Shanghai Shanghai so well in 2014. The 6 of us chose a fair selection of dishes from a wide ranging menu which features both Cantonese and Sichuan dishes are featured. Some of the latter are pretty hot and spicy, indicated on the menu by the symbol of 1 or 2 chillis, including a fearsome chicken and chilli dish. But the spiciness or heat does not overwhelm the underlying flavour of the food, which suggests that the kitchen has a chef who can cook. Some of the dishes suggest parts of the animal that one might not normally think of sampling - anyone for a garlic flavoured pig's ear? - indicating that adventurous diners can enjoy themselves here. Available drinks include a short wine list and Chinese beer. The restaurant is not large - suggesting that booking is advisable - and the surroundings are fairly spartan. But we found the service to be pretty slick and friendly enough. All in all, one of the best options for Oriental food in Nottingham.

We say…

Bold flavours, Sichuan expertise and tantalising bubble tea

Once lauded by The Times critic Giles Coren as "the best Sichuan cooking outside China itself", Hockley's Shanghai Shanghai certainly knows how to deliver on traditional South-Western Chinese food.

Sichuan pepper, chilli oil, peanuts and ginger are usually behind these moreish dishes although the menu here isn't entirely Sichuan, showcasing a diverse range of flavours from across China in addition to the signature cuisine.

You can't go wrong with an order of classic fried Cantonese-style chicken wings or crab meat and sweetcorn soup and the clay-pot rice dishes are certainly worth exploring. For the more daring, delicacies from fish head soup to salted pig's feet and even garlic pig's ear are what makes Shanghai Shanghai a firm favourite among diners looking for a truly authentic Chinese meal.
