Beauchief Abbey is a medieval monastic house in Sheffield that was officially founded in 1183 by Roberts FitzRanulph, though the land was gifted from him in around 1176. The Abbey now serves as a church part of the Church of England, although it still has strong links to its fascinating past. The history of the Abbey is one of the reasons it is still very popular to this day, and many visit it not only to see the site of the church but to also hear about the interesting history which can be traced far back and visitors want to hear all about. Groups often known as White Canons who were part of the Premonstratensian order – founded in France – lived at the Abbey and worked in local communities.
