Decided to opt for the set evening menu, (3 courses for £34). Usually with these set menus, there is little choice of dishes or very small portions, but not here. With around 6 options for each course and more than enough to full us both up!! Food was of a very high standard and the hotel itself is a wonderful place to dine in.

We say…

Situated on the corner of Waterloo Road and the South Parade is Hodgkinson’s restaurant. Dating back to 1770, Hodgkinson’s has been a focal point of Matlock Bath for centuries and is a rare, surviving, example of a fine Grade II listed hotel that boasts many of its original features.

Decorated sympathetically to its history, Hodgkinson’s also offers all of the modern amenities you would expect such as Wi-Fi. The dining room is partially clad in dark wood panelling which, when combined with vintage pattern wallpaper, creates a traditional British atmosphere which is greatly enhanced by vintage fixtures and fittings and quirky additions such as the brightly tiled floor and unique ornaments that are scattered throughout the restaurant and lounge areas. After dinner, diners are encouraged to take a seat by the roaring log fire and spend a while chatting and relaxing in the squashy sofas with a glass of wine.

The intimate, 20 seat, restaurant offers calming surroundings and an imaginative menu that showcases only the very best local produce from Derbyshire and the Peak District. When available, you can expect to tuck into dishes such as Coates’ local sirloin steak with rosemary roast potatoes, courgette carpaccio, steamed leek and a red wine jus; roasted Mediterranean vegetables in filo pastry with a red cabbage Veloute; and local rack of lamb with a tomato, aubergine and spinach mille feuille and thyme jus. A wide variety of desserts tempts diners to really spoil themselves including Trio of Chatsworth Ice Cream, Chocolate Pots or Home-made Pear Tarte Tatin.

Hodgkinson’s is truly a magical place, and offers residents and visitors alike a true taste of Derbyshire in relaxing and highly historic surroundings.
