Situated on South Road in Walkley, ten minutes drive to the west of Sheffield city centre, is Vito’s; an Italian restaurant that has been serving classic Italian cuisine since 1992. A cosy and welcoming place with a superb wine list, Vito’s serves food made only from the freshest of local produce using recipes that have been in his family for generations.
A menu to eat from; again and again
The unassuming interior features accents of red that echo the exposed brick walls whilst a white background keeps it clean and simple and a few original paintings hang on the walls. But the real surprise here is the menu. When you write about food day in and day out you see hundreds of Italian menus and, whilst they range from the spectacular to the downright insulting, can often fail to inspire. The menu at Vito’s is one that you want to read from cover to cover, carefully, and then eat from; again and again. It is filled with unfamiliar dishes yet they all read as classic Italian cooking without a hint of the try-too-hard modernist approach.
Whilst you read this masterpiece of a menu you could enjoy some simple stuzzichini; known to you and I (unless you happen to be Italian of course) as appetisers. It is just the usual selection of bruschetta, pizza bread, or olives, but the difference here is that the bruschetta is topped (amongst other things) with either truffle and pecorino cheese or Lardo di Colonnato; a Tuscan pork fat delicacy. I’m excited already, aren’t you?
The true taste of Italian country cooking
Starters include a Tuscan soup of white beans and cabbage with olive oil or a dish of meatballs and sausage in a spicy tomato sauce. Risotto and pasta can be taken either as a main course or a starter size portion and there are some delicious varieties to choose from. Risotto is made with ingredients such as chicken liver, mushrooms and onions or wild mushrooms and truffle for a true taste of Italian country cooking. The selection of well made and interesting pasta dishes includes a classic carbonara and a not so classic linguine with smoked swordfish and rocket.
Several vegetarian options are offered, such as pasta alla modernese; a dish of pasta parcels with butter, garlic, sage and mint topped with parmesan. Main course dishes continue in the rustic style with fillet steak in chicken livers, truffle, sage and dry Marsala or veal escalope with anchovies, garlic, and white wine, topped with buffalo cheese. Calves liver is lightly cooked with onions, garlic, parsley and vinegar then served on a bed of mashed potatoes. Side options include a salad of fennel with walnuts, pecorino and olive oil or a simple tomato salad made special by the addition of spicy buffalo cheese.
