At the Freemans Park Campus, on Aylestone Road in Leicester, stands the catering department of Leicester College. It is here that you will find a restaurant; run by the college and staffed by students, it is an integral part of every hospitality student’s training and each catering college in the country has one. Known as Taste, the student restaurant at Leicester College is an excellent place to eat high quality food at a bargain price and also support the future of the British restaurant industry.
Quality food at an unmissable price
Do not be misled by the fact that these are students as it is often in student environments that you will receive the highest level of care and attention to detail. These guys are at the beginning of a career in one of the most competitive and exacting industries in the world and they are excited to show the world what they can do. Out of over one hundred great restaurants in Leicester, Taste is actually in the top ten most popular, and you will not find food of this quality and at this price anywhere else.
The dining room at Taste is simple and relaxed; no it is not tea at the Dorchester but is part of the college’s dedicated hospitality suite and not simply the campus canteen. They also have a private function suite and regularly cater for weddings, Christmas parties and other large functions. They serve a limited a la carte menu that regularly changes and showcases not only the best of seasonal produce but also a wide range of world cuisines and cutting edge culinary techniques.
Immaculate presentation and a high standard of service
For starter you may find on the menu chicory tart with walnut and pear salad, and deep fried blue cheese or chicken ravioli with celeriac puree and chicken jus. Also popular is a savoury goat’s cheesecake on a puff pastry base with red onion jam. Main courses include venison haunch cooked in hay with roast celeriac, braised red cabbage and rosemary baked potatoes. Fish is always featured on the menu with dishes such as pan fried hake with confit fennel and dry sherry sauce whilst the vegetable option could be butternut squash ravioli with lemon butter sauce and crispy sage. A range of desserts is offered as well as coffee and house-made petits fours.
The food at Taste is always immaculately presented and served by students that are training in front of house and hospitality management so you can expect to receive a meal of the highest standards at a fraction of the price that you would normally pay. They are open Tuesday to Thursday for lunch and dinner, with a lunch service only each Friday. A 3 course set menu in the evenings will cost you £15.50 and £8.50 at lunchtimes.
