Ecclesall Road, to the West of Sheffield city centre, is a popular spot for nightlife and also houses some of the best restaurants in Sheffield. Day or night, it is a great place to spend a little chill time; during the day you could browse round the many boutique shops or enjoy a quiet lunch and then, come evening, you could head out for a lively night with friends but without the crowds of the city centre. Ecclesall Road offers a diverse array of cuisines so that you can enjoy the familiar or go for something different altogether.
Just off Ecclesall Road, you will find Otto’s Moroccan Restaurant. A family run independent restaurant, it is the only venue to offer North African cuisine in the whole of Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Otto’s has a deservedly great reputation for its warm and friendly service, delicious authentic cuisine and also operates a ‘BYO’ policy meaning that you can save a penny or two by bringing your own wine. They do however have a fully licensed bar with a selection of Moroccan wines and beers amongst the usual offerings.
A relaxed setting with a Moroccan touch
Set in what appears to be a large old house, Otto’s has a homely yet elegant feel to it. Filled with original features, such as the fireplace and the stairwell, the main dining room is light and spacious with a very unique ambience. The walls are covered in pictures and mirrors alongside the menu blackboards, the floor is of grey slate and the tables are linen covered. The whole place has a subtle air of shabby chic about it that is instantly welcoming. Small touches of Morocco are dotted about; a coloured glass lantern here or a silver teapot there, and enhance rather than overpower.
Freshly prepared authentic Moroccan cuisine
The menu at Otto’s offers a range of Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine. Whilst looking at the menu and enjoying a pre-dinner drink you could nibble on some marinated olives or homemade tomato and garlic bread. The menu is well labelled in terms of allergies and dietary preferences, which indicates a thoughtful approach to hospitality, and offers a huge array of choices. The starter menu features authentic items such as Moroccan Harira soup; which if you have never tried it, is a revelation of well balanced flavours that will sell you on Moroccan food for a lifetime. Fish and seafood make many appearances that include a crab, prawn and avocado salad or spicy prawn kebabs with harissa, the fragrant North African spice blend.
The list of main courses is equally exhaustive, and offers a balanced range of meat, fish or vegetable dishes. Swordfish couscous with olives, coriander, lemon and chilli offers a twist on Mediterranean flavours whilst the Moroccan chicken pie of spiced chicken in filo pastry is as authentic as you can get. You could finish your meal in classic Moroccan style with a refreshing pot of mint tea, or choose from one of the many house made desserts that includes a Moroccan almond cake with yoghurt and fresh mint.
