Hidden down a small alleyway, off Gold Street in the centre of Northampton, you will find Le Sacrebleu; a contemporary French restaurant run by a past master of hospitality and entertainment. The owner, Hamid, was once a professional organiser and chef to the stars, and has hosted parties for the likes of The Spice Girls and U2. His laid back Parisian style restaurant is perfect for a romantic tete-a-tete, but also hosts full scale weddings, birthday parties and social events, making use of the restaurant areas and spilling over into a heated marquee if the numbers dictate. Just a few minutes’ walk from the Guildhall, Le Sacrebleu holds a coveted central location.
Casual dining in true Parisian style
The dining room is on the floor above the bar; under the high sloping eaves, it has an old Parisian warehouse feel to it. Dressed predominantly in white, with accents of red and white, the room features a high ceiling that twinkles with lights amongst foliage and walls covered with colourful works of art. Outside, there is private walled courtyard with tables for those who wish to be in the open air.
The extensive menu at Le Sacrebleu is real classic French cuisine, and is also labelled to denote suitability for various dietary requirements. Food is freshly prepared to order, using local and organic produce where possible and many of the dishes are finished tableside in the classic French style. For starter you could order Salad Landaise, a classic French dish of cured and diced duck fillet with crisp bacon, red onion, croutons and black olives in a tangy vinaigrette dressing. Snails are served a la Bourgignon with rich garlic, shallot and parsley butter and frogs legs are dressed with beurre noisette, parsley and provencale sauce. Also on the starter menu are butterfly sardines in oil, chilli, garlic, and breadcrumbs, with salad, anchovies and cocktail onions in a sun dried tomato and basil dressing. The menu would not be complete without a classic French onion soup, thick and savoury with soft onions and melting cheese.
Classic French cuisine with fresh local produce
For main course, the fish menu offers sole fillet roulade; one stuffed with scallop and crab, the other with shrimp and garlic. Served in a lemon and butter sauce with tomato and chilli savoury rice this is a triumph of a dish. Steak on offer includes a classic filet mignon with gratin dauphinoise, fresh vegetables and beurre maitre d’hotel. Other cuts are also available, with a choice of sauces such as Bearnaise or shallots with white wine, mushrooms and rosemary amongst others. Rack of lamb is served with a sauce Gourmande and they also have a selection of vegetarian dishes that includes a Roquefort and potato mornay.
The dessert list is divine. All the must haves are here: tarte tatin (apple or pear), tarte au citron, pear and almond frangipane. The list goes on like a patissier’s dream and ends in a lemon brulee which looks like the perfect finale to a meal such as this.
