In Millhouses, a small area outside of Sheffield to the south-west, there is a popular Italian restaurant named for the famed Milan opera house; La Scala.

Affordable Italian Dining in the Outskirts of Sheffield

The interior of La Scala Italian restaurant is operatic and theatrical with striking posters and bold murals in red and orange. A vintage, bistro feel pervades; warm and welcoming with a subtle eccentricity. Bare stone walls contrast with rich terracotta tones and in the upstairs dining area the room is washed with light from the large bay windows. Downstairs, the area is dimly yet adequately lit, offering an intimate escape from the outside world. Staff are welcoming and friendly, with a professional knowledge of the food and extensive wine list.

The menu is packed with choice and it offers a wide range of dishes, including plenty of vegetarian options with starters such as grilled courgettes and aubergines with artichokes, roasted peppers and capers. There are several risotto dishes, as well as pasta and pizzas. A wide choice of crespelle dishes makes a welcome change; Italian crepes, they are stuffed with a variety of savoury fillings and often topped with cheese and baked. One such dish is crespelle al pollo, a pancake filled with chicken and mushrooms then topped with tomato, béchamel and mozzarella then baked in the oven until it reaches golden oozing splendour.

There is a good selection of meat main courses that feature steak, veal, chicken and even lamb, which is quite unusual for an Italian restaurant. Medaglioni is a steak of prime fillet with Parma ham and dolcelatte, cooked in red wine and cream with Italian mushrooms. From the chicken choices you could try pollo diavolo which, as the name suggests, is a spicy dish of chicken and sausage in red wine and tomato sauce. All of this is followed by a huge range of classic Italian desserts and coffees.
