In the village of Stretton, within the beautiful county of Rutland, you will find the adorable Jackson Stops Country Inn. A classic thatched cottage with a warren of rooms that are connected by the original low-stooping doorways, coming here to eat is like being invited to dine in someone’s pretty country home. Both pub and restaurant, the inn appears in the Michelin Pub Guide 2013 and was runner up in the East Midlands Food and Drink Awards. Serving British cuisine and a selection of real ales, this is true country hospitality at its best. They feature a local ale, and a guest ale, as well as a selection of fine wines by the glass.
In the summer you can enjoy your refreshments outside in the beautiful country atmosphere and the winter is equally as welcoming with a roaring log fire, so come rain or shine there is no excuse to miss a trip out to visit this little piece of England. The food at the Jackson Stops Country Inn is excellent value, especially for the quality of the ingredients and the standard of the cooking. The chef has been with the family for well over a decade and sources as many fine local ingredients as he can.
The best of British produce served with flair
The dinner a la carte has a wide selection of well thought out dishes such as Grimsby cod, crayfish and smoked haddock fishcakes served with dill and wasabi mayonnaise or if you prefer something a little more rustic there is a game terrine of venison, wild boar and rabbit with homemade piccalilli. And that’s just for starters. For main course you could choose another excellent fish dish of whole Cornish lemon sole, served grilled with caper and dill butter with chateau potatoes, or for something meaty you could order slow roasted belly of Grasmere pork with cauliflower puree and a baby vegetable panaché.
There is a great selection of carefully chosen dessert wines and a good choice of desserts such as chocolate 3 ways; a warmed brownie, double chocolate ice cream and Bailey’s white chocolate profiteroles. For a lighter alternative try a fruity dish of poached pear with pear sorbet and green apple coulis.
2 course set lunch for £13.95
You can enjoy a 2 course lunch from the set menu with its generous array of choices. Some of the dishes from the dinner a la carte make an appearance, plus some different ones such as, for starter, roast field mushrooms with melted brie and crispy bacon with cranberry and red onion marmalade. The main courses look equally inviting with dishes that include sausages made from local rare breed pork, served with mustard mash and baby Yorkshire puddings.
