Amidst the flourishing restaurant scene of Northampton, close to the theatre and main shopping areas, you will find Felix Yu The Restaurant. Once the youngest chef at Hong Kong’s famous Kowloon restaurant, Felix Yu spent years honing his craft in some of London’s finest restaurants before opening his eponymous restaurant in Northampton. Known as one of the finest Chinese restaurants in the county it serves authentic and imaginative Chinese cuisine prepared from the finest local produce and is thoroughly deserving of its place on the UK food map.
A modern and calming atmosphere with great Chinese food
The large dining room is modern and relaxed with enough of an oriental touch to set the scene without dominating it. The tables are as they should be; large rounds with plenty of room and the classic carousel in the centre that always manages to evoke a childlike sense of excitement in me. I think all tables should be built this way but then I like the sense of a sharing meal. Bamboo, both green and dried, creates calming elements against a neutral palette whilst judicious use of mirrors hints of a little Feng-Shui at work here.
The menu is characteristically large but each dish is different, not simply a repeat of a theme using a different ingredient. The vast list of appetisers includes crispy king prawn with wasabi cream or soft shell crab with chilli and crushed garlic. There is also a delicious sounding dish of crispy quail with lemongrass and honey. Alongside these is a selection of oriental style soups and vegetarian appetisers such as crisp French beans with chilli and peppercorn salt.
Peking duck hand carved at the table
Next comes the Peking duck, hand carved at the table or a dish of slow roasted honey lamb shank which shreds off the bone in much the same way as duck. Poultry dishes come as chicken claypot with Chinese rice wine and honey or stir fried with ginger, garlic and shallot. Representing the meat contingency we have slow cooked beef brisket with Sichuan chilli or tender pork with lychee and miso sauce. You can pick your lobster live from the tank or choose seafood dishes such as monkfish with teriyaki sauce or fresh scallops stuffed with minced prawns and then wok fried in chilli and peppercorn salt; a spice blend that features in many of Felix’s signature dishes.
There are plenty of vegetable dishes to please the non-meat eaters and also lots of rice and noodles. Worth mentioning is fried rice with prawn and duck baked in a lotus leaf; irrestible. Felix Yu The Restaurant is open for dinner in the evenings, Monday to Saturday, and offers the house special fixed price menu for £30.80 or a vegetarian fixed price menu for £18.80.
