Celebrate the Fruits de Mer festival at The Olive Branch

During the month of August the UK has some of the best shellfish available, including lobster, crab and mussels. The multi award-winning Olive Branch pub, in the picturesque village of Clipsham, has chosen to celebrate with a month long Fruits de Mer festival.

Head chef Sean Hope’s passion and dedication for serving only the freshest of ingredients led him and his team to travel to Cromer on the Norfolk Coast, leaving at 4:30 in the morning! Here amongst the sandy beaches and lobster pots they sourced fresh, locally caught seafood with help from Kevin Jonas of Jonas Seafoods (specialists in crab and lobster).

This trip helped to influence Sean’s menu for the Fruits de Mer festival and there are two very special East Runton inspired lobster dishes available this month. For those that like a twist on the classics there is grilled lobster thermidor served with summer salad, saffron vinaigrette, lobster bisque and a choice of pub chips or Boston new potatoes (Half: £15. Whole: £30).

If you are feeling adventurous why not try the fresh lobster claw and tail meat (no shells) with foaming basil butter, lobster tortellini made in-house with knuckle meat, chopped tarragon and scallop mousse. This is accompanied by summer vegetables and fresh chervil picked from the pub’s new allotment (£26.50).

Of course if you want to try a wider selection of fresh seafood there is a special platter available Monday to Saturday lunchtimes throughout August (£21.50 per person). Rock oysters with shallot vinegar, pickled cockles & whelks, moules marinieres, devilled whitebait, and clams with chilli butter are just a few examples of what is on offer. For an additional £7.95 each potted shrimps and crab mayonnaise can also be added. Please mention ‘Fruits de Mer’ when booking and receive a complimentary glass of crisp, dry muscadet per person, the perfect accompaniment to a wide array of delectable seafood.

With choices like this on the menu it’s not surprising The Olive Branch in Clipsham is one of only 13 UK pubs to hold a Michelin star and is regarded as one of the best restaurants in Rutland. All of these dishes are part of The Olive Branch’s Fruits de Mer celebration, which runs until the end of August. Don’t miss out!
