When you’re looking for a seriously good meal out, there are two ways to go. Ask a seriously foodie friend for a recommendation or look to the AA guide to see where they have bestowed their coveted rosettes in your area. Leeds has its fair share of rosettes, so gourmet dining isn’t hard to find when you’re in the know.
One rosette is awarded by the AA guide to restaurants that stand out in their area, who cook with understanding and skill using good quality well –sourced ingredients. Two rosettes take the level to excellence and consistent high standards. Three rosettes raise the bar even more and indicate really outstanding quality. Only about 10% of restaurants listed in the AA guide achieve this level or higher.
Leeds is home to Anthony’s Restaurant, which not only has three AA rosettes but is also Michelin listed, an even rarer accolade. Chef Tony Flinn made waves with his passion and flair when he opened this restaurant in 2005 and has been recognised by the food cognoscenti ever since, making Anthony’s a destination for food lovers from all over the UK. Expect creative menus beautifully executed with the highest quality ingredients.
With no AA rosettes but a Michelin listing, Piazza by Anthony has to be slipped in here. Part of the successful Anthony’s Restaurant family, this is a more accessible and affordable restaurant in the Corn Exchange offering excellent lunches, brunches and full meals as well as coffee and patisserie. It is surrounded by artisan food shops which all supply both the Anthony’s restaurants, so you can go home with wonderful cheeses, chocolates or bakery goods to continue the gourmet delights.
It’s not hard to find restaurants with AA rosettes that serve good Modern British and European food. Much harder to find other cuisines well represented. In Leeds Thai Edge makes a stand for excellent Thai food with its one AA rosette well deserved. A beautiful airy space with a lively ambience and a focus on the freshest ingredients cooked to perfection, Thai Edge is an essential stop on a gourmet tour of Leeds.
Getting out of the city there is another not-to-be-missed treat in store. To the south-east of Leeds, The Calverley Grill Restaurant at Oulton Hall, with its one AA rosette, offers fantastic British food with a subtle twist. The beautiful surroundings and gorgeous architecture make it a fabulous place for a day out in the Yorkshire countryside.
So enjoy tastes of the gourmet high life, as you explore the best of your area, and don’t forget to check out Go Dine before you book, as with some of the special offers currently available it could be more affordable that you’d think.
