The historic streets of Lincoln attract many a visitor enjoying medieval streets, ancient architecture and sense of living history. Built on a hill, the town has two levels with the stunning cathedral and castle at the top connected by narrow Steep Street to the bottom of town where the more commercial activities go on. The visitor exploring the delights of Lincoln probably doesn’t want to be running up and down the hill too many times in a day, so we have picked out restaurants in the uphill part of town, so that you can eat well, while soaking up the historic atmosphere.
If views over the Cathedral and a great location are what you’re looking for the Restaurant at the Lincoln Hotel is a great choice for a lunch or dinner. Choose between the more informal brasserie in the Long Room or a fine chef’s menu in the Green Room and a great British menu inspired by local and seasonal produce.
For something more exotic, Thailand No1 is a funky Thai restaurant on Bailgate with plenty of great flavour and some interesting Chef’s specials as well as well known Thai dishes that are old favourites.
Also on Bailgate, Cafe Zoot is open all day providing excellent French and Italian cuisine at reasonable prices and with a relaxing atmosphere perfect for resting feet weary from too much sightseeing.
If food is your focus and gourmet your preference then The Old Bakery is the perfect place to break from the historic beauty around. With 2 AA rosettes and many local awards, it offers excellent modern British cuisine with plenty of inspiration from Italy too. Don’t just expect to walk in off the street and find a table here though, booking is essential, often weeks in advance.
Perhaps more of an informal pub restaurant would fit with your exploration of this old English town? In that case the Wig and Mitre would be a great choice. Serving food all day it offers a taste of Lincolnshire with local ingredients beautifully cooked. Set on the picturesque Steep Hill it is perfectly placed to begin or end your visit to Lincoln’s uphill area.
