The Noel @ Whitwell in Rutland for great Christmas food and real ale

A traditional pub serving British cuisine, The Noel is on the Main Street of Whitwell, near Oakham, in Rutland. Within walking distance of Rutland Water, The Noel is popular with locals and tourists for its great food, live music and real ale. Avid supporters of local produce, the kitchen at the Noel serves up a selection of light bar type meals as well as the simple traditional meals that grace the a la carte menu.

The dining room of this old pub building is surprisingly minimalist with an almost oriental feel to it. Black lacquer and bright red accents stand out against a neutral background to create a light and modern space. In the less formal areas large floral prints, again with that oriental vibe, soften the edges whilst a large stone fireplace hints at the building’s heritage. In the bar area you will find large cosy armchairs and a roaring log fire; perfect for a quiet pre-Christmas meal and a few drinks to round off the evening.

A 3 course menu and a disco

The Noel is currently taking bookings for Christmas Party Nights and makes a great change from the usual city centre restaurants to enjoy a meal out with colleagues and friends. The 3 course menu starts with dishes such as cauliflower and mature cheddar soup or tiger prawn and crayfish salad with lime yoghurt. For main course you can order a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings, including sage and smoked bacon stuffing with cranberry jelly. Also on offer is beef bourguignon with spring onion mash and some delicious fish or vegetarian alternatives. For dessert you can continue with the traditional theme and enjoy Christmas pudding with rum sauce or opt for warm Bakewell tart served with honey cream.

The a la carte dinner menu will still be available throughout December and the Christmas season. Dishes on the starter menu include local black pudding with poached egg and grain mustard cream, or leek, red onion and local stilton bruschetta. As well as a selection of pasta dishes and big bowl salads there are comforting main course dishes such as slow roasted shoulder of lamb with mash and red wine gravy or honey glazed ham hock with grain mustard mash.
