We say…

Family-run authentic Keralan restaurant in Sutton-in-Ashfield.

While Sutton-in-Ashfield is a far cry from the glittering Malabar coastlines of southern India, New Nila does a stellar job of transporting its diners to Kerala’s stunning views over the Indian Ocean in spirit.

Keralan flavours are a symphony of fresh ground spices and herbs with ginger, cloves, cardamom and turmeric making an appearance in most dishes and is a cuisine known for its minimal reliance on oils and fats in the cooking process. As a result, it lends itself as a natural choice for health-conscious diners.

Seafood unsurprisingly plays a leading role in the Keralan ingredient line-up and even New Nila’s “Fisherman’s Cove” section of the menu isn’t enough to contain all its dishes originating from the sea.

Fish aside, we’d make a beeline for New Nila’s take on Chicken Kurumulago, a favourite from the Travancore area of Kerala made with boneless chicken in a black pepper sauce with onion, ginger, garlic, turmeric and cashew nuts. Fresh Beetroot Upperi makes a refreshing departure from the usual Indian veggies list while an extensive selection of dosas is enough to take anyone’s fancy.

The modern dining space of the restaurant itself offers an airy ambience and New Nila sets the bar high in the cosy world of Southern Indian cuisine, delivering spectacular flavours every time from recipes passed through the generations.
