Go dine is your free eating out guide to the best local restaurants
Leicestershire is a beautiful green county and, although split from picturesque Rutland a few years ago, is a great tourism destination, famous for much more than its top quality Stilton and Melton Mowbray pork pies. A lot of Leicestershire restaurants carry on the tradition, using the best in local produce wherever possible and with so many fine ingredients available Leicestershire and Leicester restaurants stand tall. When Rutland restaurants are added to the pile the area becomes even more of a culinary diamond.
Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands with a population of over 300,000 and the 10th largest conurbation in England. Known for its numerous and varied cultures and diversities, Leicester has won Curry Capital of the UK for its strength and numbers of Indian restaurants, but there is more to the Leicester restaurant scene than just fabulous, authentic curry.
Leicester city centre is a relatively compact pedestrianised zone with a large market place, volumes of bars and a wealth of good restaurants, once you know where to find them. The High Cross is a haven for shoppers with a vast array of shops and boutiques, and there have been some welcome additions to the restaurant scene here, such as MemSaab Leicester, aiming at the high-end Indian cuisine market. Maiyango will continue to be a favourite with locals and, due to its critical acclaim and uncompromising attitude towards quality, has to be considered one of the finest in the region. London Road near the station is a bustling and busy part of town where you will find the large restaurant, Antibo Leicester, famed for its Italian cuisine and open kitchens, and the new kid on the block, 4550 Miles from Delhi restaurant.
Outside Leicester you will find an abundance of quality restaurant venues. To the east, and a county in its own right, Rutland is home to the fabulous Michelin-starred Hambleton Hall, where all their produce is grown on the estate, and further east is The Olive Branch in Clipsham, again Michelin-starred but you will not find a table cloth, (unless you request one of course!). Loughborough, to the north of Leicester is a dining paradise in its own right, with Reims in Quorn, a fantastic Tapas restaurant within an 18th century building, the vibrant Tarboush Turkish restaurant and, just outside in Wymeswold, you could visit Savoy-trained chef Danny, at the Hammer and Pincers.
Leicestershire is a great place for foodies and restaurant-loving people and Go dine have worked with the official tourism board to find the best.
