Named after the state formerly known as ‘Madras’, Chennai is a restaurant specialising in South Indian cuisine and is an exciting addition to the Nottingham restaurant scene. Situated on the edge of Market Square in Nottingham, on a street lined with drinking and dining options such as Sinatras and Tonic, Chennai offers something a little different and demand for a table at this venue is huge.

The team at Chennai have a wealth of knowledge under their belts, with the chefs alone having 20 years experience cooking Indian food.  Their skill and passion for the food they are creating shines through in every dish.

The Chennai motto is that ‘every man should treat himself like a king’ and once you enter this restaurant that is how you will feel. The interior is designed with classical Indian taste; carved booths, tiled floors and whitewashed walls all add to the authentic atmosphere that Chennai strive to maintain. As Chennai itself is a major centre for music, art and culture in Southern India, the restaurant reflects this through photographs of Indian architecture and women in beautiful traditional dress that fill the walls.

The restaurants speciality are pancakes or Dosai and dishes that come highly recommended include the Rava Dosai or the Masala Dosai. The Chettinad Crab Curry, which is served in its shell in a rich sauce, is a real treat. There is also a good selection of vegetarian dishes on offer.

Chennai South Indian restaurant
is ideal for those looking for an intimate meal as the booths create a sense of closeness. For larger parties the restaurant has a number of larger tables that would be suited for a special celebration or evening out.

Overall

Having been to Kayal Nottingham, had to give this one a go. Firstly, the value for money is brilliant in here! A good selection of vegetarian and non-veg dishes, all at great prices. Secondly, the food is very tasty. Although the menu may not be as fancy and varied as Kayal, the food definitely has a more authentic and more homely feel to it. And the spicing and flavours are great. Would definitely recommend the food if you want it to feel like you're in their kitchen!
