  • National Stilton Week – 15th-21st April 2012

    EnglishFrenchGermanItalianPortugueseRussianSpanish

Did you know that this week it’s National Stilton Week? That’s right, from the 15th to the 21st of April there’s a whole week dedicated to the celebration of the great British blue and there’s more to this tasty cheese than meets the eye.

The history of stilton can be traced back to the early 18th century and though it is clear that the recipe has changed somewhat over the years, it still remains one of the world’s best known cheeses. Used as an ingredient in everything from starters to mains, soups and even enjoyed as a savoury dessert, stilton is a huge part of the British cheese scene and loved by many.

Stilton is such as source of British pride that it even has its own Certification Trade Mark and is an EU Protected food name which means that when you’re buying a cheese called stilton, it has to have met the strict guidelines that govern the production and retail of the cheese.

These rules state that stilton can only be produced in one of the five licenced dairies in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire; these are the Colston Bassett Dairy, Cropwell Bishop, Long Clawson Dairy, Tuxford and Tebbutt Creamery and Websters. It must be made from locally produced milk that has been pasteurised before use. It can only be made in a cylindrical shape. It must be allowed to form its own crust or coat. It must never be pressed and finally, it must have the blue veins radiating from the centre of the cheese.

If you’re craving stilton now but don’t fancy cooking with it yourself, why not visit some of the superb restaurants in Derbyshire such as The George Hotel and Restaurant, one of the supporters of National Stilton Week, for a tasty treat without the washing up. There is also a huge selections of restaurants in Nottingham such as Tom Browns, whose recipe of the month is parfait of stilton, pickled walnuts and grapes with a caramelised onion chutney and restaurants in Leicester such as Stapleford Park that champion locally produced, locally sourced cuisine.

Not a fan of cheese? Not to worry! None of the restaurants in Nottingham, restaurants in Derby or restaurants in Leicester will force you to eat stilton, so you’re safe to eat out this National Stilton Week!
